Family & Partner Visas – Bringing Your Loved Ones to Australia
If you’re an Australian citizen or permanent resident, there are visa options to help your family or partner come live with you in Australia—either for a short stay or permanently.
Family Visas – Reuniting Families
Australia has several visas that make it possible for families to be together. Some common options include:
Child Visa (Subclass 101 or 802)
For children applying from inside or outside Australia.
Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)
For older parents wanting to stay in Australia permanently.
Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143)
A faster option for parents who can pay a higher visa fee.
NZ Citizen Family Visa (Subclass 461)
For family of New Zealand citizens living in Australia.
Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
For parents to stay in Australia temporarily.
Basic Requirements for Family Visas
Prove the Relationship
You’ll need documents showing your family connection.
Have a Sponsor
A relative who’s an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen must sponsor the application.
Assurance of Support
The sponsor may need to commit to helping financially.
Partner Visas – For Spouses and De Facto Partners
Partner visas let you live in Australia with your spouse or partner if they’re an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Types of Partner Visas
Onshore Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801)
If you’re already in Australia.
Offshore Partner Visa (Subclass 309/100)
If you’re applying from outside Australia.
How It Works – Two Stages
Temporary Visa
You’ll first get a temporary visa while your application is being assessed.
Permanent Visa
About two years later, if your relationship is still genuine, you can get the permanent visa. In some cases, both stages may be granted together if there’s enough proof of a long-term relationship.
If You’re a Partner of a New Zealand Citizen:
Subclass 461 Visa: If your partner is a New Zealand citizen living in Australia but not eligible for certain visas, this one allows you to stay up to 5 years.
Main Requirements for Partner Visas
Be married or in a committed de facto relationship.
Prove your relationship is genuine and ongoing.
Live together or only live apart temporarily.
Meet health and character standards.
