Skills Assessments – What You Need to Know
If you’re applying for a skilled visa in Australia, chances are you’ll need a skills assessment. This process checks if your qualifications and work experience match the standards for your chosen job in Australia.
What Is a Skills Assessment?
Most skilled visas require that your occupation is listed on one of Australia’s skilled occupation lists. Each listed job has a specific assessing authority—an organisation that checks whether you have the right skills for that role. We will find the correct authority for your job and apply for the assessment.
Every assessing authority has its own process, fees, and timelines, so it’s important to get it right with what’s involved before you apply.
Why Skills Assessments Matter
For many visa types, a positive skills assessment is a must. Even if it’s not always mandatory, it may still be requested during your application process. That’s why we always double-check the visa requirements and know when to get your assessment done.
Which Visas May Require a Skills Assessment?
You’ll likely need one if you’re applying for:
General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas
Employer Sponsored visas
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa
Temporary Graduate visa
How to Get a Skills Assessment – Step by Step
Step 1: Find Your Assessing Authority
We look up the relevant authority for your nominated job and get in touch with them. We do this well ahead of your visa application, as processing times can vary, and some assessments may take a while.
Step 2: Get Your Result
Once you’ve completed the assessment, you’ll get an outcome. If it’s positive, we include the copy with your visa application. If it’s not, you won’t be eligible for a visa that requires it—so preparation is key.
